Crosby Assists Off the Ice

The city of Pittsburgh has been fortunate to have so many legendary athletes to, not only play for their sports team, but also to do charity work in their free time. The newest person added to this list? Sidney Crosby.

“He has so much talent and is exciting to watch with his high level of skills and performance,” said freshman J.R. Brown. Many did not know that he would be giving a little more than just that. Sidney Crosby established the Sidney Crosby Foundation in 2009, an organization that improves the lives of children who are sick or struggling. He felt that children are so innocent and they needed a chance to live their life.

These youngsters are unable to pay for care for themselves, so Sid stepped in. Sidney, only 24 years of age, related to the these children. “He is young, a good member of the team, and a good person,” said freshman Matthew Copeland. Sid was not given much time to develop the organization, but planned on doing more with it in the future. Sidney did not only spread his wealth to sick kids in Pittsburgh, though.

Kids from all over benefited from Sidney's kind acts. Through the organization, he also donated brand new hockey equipment to minor hockey teams in Nova Scotia. These teams could not afford to pay for new equipment. Sid made it difficult for people to find a way to criticize him. “Sidney has made an impact on the city of Pittsburgh because he gives back to the community,” said freshman Adam Alavi. He made multiple visits to the Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh along with other team members. Several other penguins created ways that they could help out.

Pittsburgh Penguins and staff made their own organizations and participated in charities. One of the largest, the Mario Lemieux Foundation, gave help to many people in need by Mario Lemieux. "Sidney brought back the Stanley Cup to Pittsburgh," said freshman Heather Bogart. Many people remember what he has done for the Penguins, but what really mattered was what he did for the community and people in need.
