The Show Must Go On

Several changes helped the Penguins succeed while absent. Not many people argued about the talent that Sidney possesses. “He is a born leader and a strong player,” said freshman Adam Alavi. Crosby, a natural goal scorer as well as defender, contributed well on the penalty kill and power play. With Crosby not being able to play, the Penguins needed to find someone to fill in this important spot. The Penguins needed to still be able to rack up the points.

James Neal responded very well to the need for more goals. He earned his way to the top line on offense and played during the power play and penalty kill. He even played well enough to earn a spot in the NHL All-Star Game. The Penguins improved immensely since acquiring Sidney. “Crosby makes Pittsburgh a winning team,” said freshman J.R. Brown. Although he helped lead them to a Stanley Cup, the Pens needed to earn it without him until he returned. |
Pens players knew they needed to improve if they were going to remain as one of the top teams in the NHL. "Sidney has so much talent and is exciting to watch with his high level of skills and performance," said freshman Matthew Copeland. To remain as a top team, the Penguins defense needed to be at the top of their game. Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang defended strongly and helped out on offense as well. Since Letang's return, he put up many points for the Penguins. Brooks Orpik's numbers continued to be very high as well. Sidney Crosby did his duties for defending, but the biggest loss is the goals and assists that he produced. |
Evgeni Malkin took up Sidney Crosby's responsibilities in that department. He has continued to improve each game and is one of the most dangerous players in the game.He defended strongly, and became one of the point leaders in the NHL. Malkin led the Penguins to many wins, and scored multiple shootout goals. Geno has been the top player for the Penguins in Sid's absence. Although he missed his teammate, he knew Sid needed to get back up to full strength and not hurt himself again. |
Many people cautioned Sidney not to push himself too far. "He wants to get better and healthy for when he is able to play hockey again.," said Sophomore Julia Schuerle. Sidney understood that it is a long process. He worked hard and did everything in his power to get healthy. The Pittsburgh Penguins awaited his return, but they made the best of the situation. |
